The Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) is the regulatory body responsible for ensuring the safety and quality of food contact materials in the UAE. Food contact materials include any materials that come into contact with food during its production, processing, storage, or transportation, such as packaging materials, utensils, and food processing equipment.
To register a food contact material with ESMA, the manufacturer or importer must submit an application that includes the following information:
Product composition: The application should include detailed information about the materials and chemicals used in the product, including their sources, purity, and any additives.
Intended use: The application should specify the intended use of the product, such as packaging for dry or wet foods, or utensils for cooking or serving.
Safety data: The application should include data on the safety of the product, including any potential risks to human health or the environment.
Test results: The application should include test results from accredited laboratories that demonstrate the product’s compliance with ESMA’s regulations and standards.
ESMA will review the application and may request additional information or testing to ensure the safety of the product. Once the product is approved, ESMA will issue a certificate of conformity that allows the product to be imported or manufactured in the UAE.
In addition to registering with ESMA, manufacturers or importers may also need to register their products with other regulatory agencies in the UAE. For example, food contact materials that come into direct contact with food must be registered with the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP), while food packaging materials must be registered with the Dubai Municipality.
The registration process for food contact materials in the UAE can be complex and time-consuming, and it is important to work with experienced consultants or legal professionals to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in fines or other legal penalties.
